Optimal maintenance of your outboard motor involves applying grease at specific points to ensure smooth operation and protect against moisture.
We offer both OEM Quicksilver lubrications for Mercury engines and OEM Evinrude Grease for Evinrude Johnson Engines
Regular greasing is a simple but critical task that can be done with just a grease gun and Reference your engine's operation and maintenance manual for detailed grease points and frequency, available for download or purchase if not at hand.
Key Grease Points for Outboard Motors:
- Propeller Shaft: Grease the shaft every time the propeller is removed or reinstalled to prevent corrosion and seizing.
- Swivel Bracket: Found on most outboards, this pivot point requires greasing via its fittings, accessible by tilting the motor.
- Tilt Tube: Grease fittings here allow the outboard to tilt smoothly. Models with remote steering may have additional points related to steering mechanisms.
- Trim Rod Ends: For outboards with power trim, apply grease to the ends of the hydraulic rods to facilitate smooth operation.
- Under the Cowl: The powerhead may have several grease points, such as the throttle linkage and starter pinion shaft, detailed in your manual.
Pro Tips for Effective Greasing:
- A small grease gun that holds the cartridge, which can be found and bought here
- Clean each fitting before application to prevent contamination.
- If a fitting is clogged, try freeing it with a Phillips screwdriver or a punch; replace if necessary.
Choosing the Correct Grease:
We offer both grease from Evinrude and from Mercury, it is always good practice to use OEM parts both advised by the manufacturer.
